A little about the album:
I arranged and performed this album with friends of mine: Anthony Anurca (bassoon) and Rebecca Zapen (violin). We eventually dubbed ourselves the "Rivers and Lakes Band". The first time the band got together was to record a composition I wrote on piano called "Waltz in D". I had a vague idea of what I wanted them to play, but nothing too set in stone. I knew they were both good players, so I figured we would just get together and see what happens. The "Waltz in D" session turned out great. I was more then happy with the arrangements we came up with and almost immediately felt a connection with these two people. I'd worked with Anthony on a few songs in the past and I knew we worked well together, but adding Rebecca made it into something different -- not only musically, but fraternally. It felt like we were a group, and I knew this was not the last time I'd work with these folks.
A few months later I wrote the words for "Rivers and Lakes". I did it all in one sitting, which spanned about forty five minutes. I wanted to make the words into songs. And when I was thinking of possible arrangements for the music, the first thing that popped into my head was getting back together with Anthony and Rebecca. We arranged the songs over the course of a couple months, and then recorded it live at Rebecca's house. Later I did some over dubs in my apartment and the Green Shed studio.
I decided against giving the songs individual names, because for me they all are too much a part of the same thing. What that thing is will remain a mystery to most folks. I wanted it all to be connected, that's the point. All the words were written from one stream of conscience, and I wanted to keep that part of its inception as intact as possible when translating it to song. That's why each song is simply named "Rivers and Lakes Part One, Part Two, Part Three, etc.". So now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
A tidbit of trivia: I got the title of the album "Rivers and Lakes" from a "Baby Einstein" video. At the time my little family and I lived in a little apartment and my little daughter would watch those little video's all the time. I remember a segment on one of the video's called "Rivers and Lakes", because I thought the kid that announced the bit sounded funny. So the phrase got stuck in my brain and somehow found its way out in these songs. Eventually it became the title of the album.
